Zuliani claims a first as Lady Buc swimmers take fifth in Parkersburg Penguin Invitational

PARKERSBURG – Cameron Zuliani recorded the lone first for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc swimmers and added a third-place to help the Lady Bucs to a fifth-place finish in the 2019 Parkersburg Penguin Invitational this past Saturday.

Zuliani took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.23 and took third in the 50-yard freestyle with a clocking of 25.96.

“Cameron swam season-best times in both events,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Will Squires.

The Lady Bucs finished in the fifth spot with 72 points.

Bridgeport won the meet with 278 points while Parkersburg was second with 246, George Washington third with 235 and Wheeling Park fourth with 216.

Jennifer Williams had the two other top-10 finishes for the Lady Bucs.

She placed sixth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of a 1:23.22 and eighth in the 200-yard IM with a clocking of 2:46.66.

Merrody Malone recorded an 11th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (2:31.62) and a 12th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:16.04).

Emma Reger also added a 12th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:17.83.

In the two relay events, the foursome of Johnna Smith Williams, McKenzie Reynolds and Zuliani placed sixth with a time of 1:57.02 and the quartet of Reger, Williams, Zuliani and Reynolds placed ninth in the 200-yard medley with a time of 2:12.57.

“Our relays struggled with the competition a little,” Squires stated. “We managed to be in the fast heats in both relays, but we didn't quite hit the times from earlier in the year.”

Squires said the loaded meet was a good experience for his team.

“We had a great learning experience this past weekend at what was probably the fastest and most competitive meet of our season,” remarked Squires. “Our girls did very well again considering our team-size placing fifth.”

The Lady Bucs will return to the pool Friday night at West Virginia Wesleyan against Grafton and Philip Barbour on Senior Night.

“We are looking forward this meet,” Squires concluded. “We hope to work hard the next couple of weeks and made a strong push towards regionals.”

The home meet will start at 6:45 p.m.
