RACHEL – The Buckhannon-Upshur tennis Lady Bucs had a rough start to their season, dropping a pair of matches on the road this week.
They lost their opener on Monday to Lincoln by a 7-0 score then dropped a 6-1 verdict to North Marion.
“The girls are very inexperienced and young,” remarked first-year head coach Jason Rock. “Only two girls have played on the team previously (not including last year when the season was only two weeks due to COVID-19) and those two girls were not varsity.”
Against North Marion, Rock had to shuffle his line-up when No. 3 Madelyn Frye and No. 4 Malia Bowers were unable to make the trip.
“Madelyn and Malia couldn’t make it so everybody but our 1 and 2 moved up for the girls,” explained Rock. “The girls were much more competitive overall against North Marion than Lincoln even though the scores don’t totally show that. The girls, who stepped up, did great for their second match ever!”
The lone win for the Lady Bucs went to Ashtyn Goodman and Emily Adams at No. 3 doubles as they beat Kenzie Fluharty and Josie Fluharty by injury forfeit.
The Lady Bucs will be back in action Monday hosting Grafton.
