X-C Bobcats place ninth at MEC Championships


WHEELING – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats took ninth place out of 10 teams in the 2019 Mountain East Conference Championships that were held Saturday on the Grispin Golf Course at the Oglebay Resort.

Ryan Hebb was the top Bobcat runner placing 29th with a time of 29:15.2.

Those scoring for the ‘Cats were Scott Soucier  in 42nd (30:52.9), Tyler Channell in 46th (31:46.3), Austin Gresser in 52nd (33:45.8) and Jarrett Gandy in 54th (34:44.6).

Also running for the Bobcats were Daniel Kniceley in 55th (35:25.4) and Destry Nelson in 59th (37:02.4).

Charleston took four of the top five spots as Jack Mastandrea defeated 64 other runners for the individual title with a time of 26:04.2.

Charleston’s Kyle Hinson was second (26:29.6), Alex Kitony third (26:57.3) and David Cecchi fifth (27:06.1).

David Magad of Davis & Elkins claimed fourth with a time of 27:02.3.

With four top five finishes, Charleston claimed the conference team title with 20 points while Davis & Elkins was second with 45 and Concord was third with 89.

West Liberty took fourth with 100 points while Frostburg State was fifth with 157 points.

Wesleyan finished ninth with 224 points.

Mastandrea was voted as the league's Runner of the Year, while Nate Leichner of Concord was selected as the Freshman of the Year.

Leichner finished sixth overall.

Charleston coach Nick Bias was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.
