BRIDGEPORT — West Liberty’s Kat Donzella has been named the Mountain East Conference Softball Player of the Week with fellow Hilltopper Makenzie Amend and West Virginia Wesleyan’s Abigail O’Shields sharing the league's Pitcher of the Week honors.
Wheeling, W.Va. native Donzella was 15-for-26 at the plate for the week with more than half of her hits going for extra bases. She scored 10 runs and drive in six more from the leadoff spot. Donzella had five doubles and three homeruns on the week with a .633 on-base percentage and 1.115 slugging percentage.
Amend, a senior from Wheeling, W.Va., threw 21 scoreless innings this week for the Hilltoppers. She ended the week 3-0 in four outings including a complete game shutout against Charleston. Amend had 31 strikeouts with just one walk. Over her last 16 appearances (dating back to March 21), she has been scored on twice.
O’Shields, a sophomore from Dagsboro, Del. Went 5-0 in the circle this week for the Bobcats. She picked up both wins on the mound against West Virginia State including a complete game shutout against the Yellow Jackets in game one. O’Shields also notched two wins over Frostburg State and one against Glenville State this week.
