WVWC’s Austin Davis takes second; Bobcat golfers place fourth in MEC Spring Classic

URBANA (Ohio) – Austin Davis shot a tournament-best 67 in round two and finished with runner-up honors for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats in the Mountain East Conference Spring Classic at the Urbana Country Club last weekend.

Davis shot a 77 on day one but dropped 10 strokes off his score for a total of 144 to finish in a four-way tie for second place.

He was one shot behind Shepherd’s Owen Elliott who earned low medalist honors with a 143 (72-71).

Fairmont State’s Ben Knight, Concord’s Jared Porter and Charleston’s Ritwik Jain all finished in a tie with Davis with 144s.

Davis’ two rounds helped the Bobcats to a tie for fifth place with a 601 two-day total.

The ‘Cats fired a 310 on day one and dropped their score to a 291 on day two.

Charleston won the event with a 585 (298-287) while Davis & Elkins was second with a 592 (295-297).

Concord finished third while West Liberty was fourth.

Shepherd tied Wesleyan for fifth.

Rounding out the field was Fairmont State in sixth, Urbana and UVa.-Wise in a tie for eighth, Wheeling Jesuit 10th, Glenville State 11th and West Virginia State 12th.

James Snavely and Nicholas Casingal each finished 20th for Wesleyan.

Snavely shot a 76 and a 75 for a 151 while Casingal fired a 78 and a 73 for a 151 as well.

Zach Chapman finished 31st with a 155 (79-76) and Dan Morgret placed 40th with a 160 (84-76).

The MEC also announced their post-season awards last week.

The University of Charleston’s Eoin Cunniffe headlines the 2018-19 Mountain East Conference Men’s Golf honors as the league’s Player of the Year. West Liberty’s Alex Easthom was the Freshman of the Year, while Charleston’s Will Johnson was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

The Spring Classic ended the 2018-19 golf season for the Bobcats.
