BUCKHANNON —The West Virginia Wesleyan College tennis teams claimed a pair of victories against Salem last Friday, March 4 in their respective home openers. By collecting the victory, the WVWC tennis teams also completed a regular season sweep of the Tigers.
On the women’s side, the Bobcats clinched the doubles point with a pair of convincing 6-0 wins from the duos of senior Sai Sakamoto and freshman Cayley Symons and redshirt junior Madison Chen and junior Molly Hull. The Lady Bobcats sealed the victory over Salem with singles wins from freshman Alanis Alvarez, Symons, senior Rebecca Osborne, and Chen. While the Tigers answered by claiming singles wins at #1 seed and #2 seed to round out the contest, it was ultimately too little, too late as the Lady Bobcats claimed a 5-2 win.
On the men’s side, in the very first doubles match of the evening of the evening, the two teams became deadlocked in a very tight contest. The Bobcats eventually collected a hard-fought 4-3 win in what was a back-and-forth, evenly matched affair. The Bobcats wasted little time building off this big win, claiming the doubles point after winning on all three courts. The Bobcats utilized that momentum the rest of the way, coasting to wins in five out of the evening’s six singles matches to defeat the Tigers by a 6-1 tally.
Up next, the WVWC tennis teams will hit the road as they prepare to start their spring trip down south to the Carolinas. The WVWC tennis teams will start their spring break trip with a game against Barton College, before taking on Francis Marion University, Belmont Abbey, and Limestone University. The WVWC tennis teams will return home to take on Bloomsburg University at home on Saturday, March 12.
