WVWC swimming teams post strong performance during Davis & Elkins meet

ELKINS — Both the West Virginia Wesleyan College men and women’s swimming teams battled hard against Davis & Elkins, ultimately falling short this past Saturday, January 8 at the George A. Myles Pool in Elkins.

 The action was kickstarted by first event of the day, the women’s 200-meter medley relay. The team of Amanda Schlor, Jennifer Williams, Morgan Bennet, and Morgan Choffin all combined to place second in the event to start the meet off on a positive note for the Bobcats. 

 The meet’s individual events began with Lillie Archer taking third in the 1,000-yard free with a time of 12:21.32. Archer also completed the 500-yard free with a time of 6:07.47. Choffin, carried her strong performance as part of the 200-yard medley relay team over to her individual 200-meter freestyle event, taking first place with a time of 2:05.79. 

 In the Women’s 50-yard backstroke, Schlor posted a competitive time of 30.74, good enough to earn second-place. Schlor was joined in the event by teammate Hannah Cook, who finished closely behind with a time of 32:08. 

Jennifer Williams was the second to touch the wall in the 50-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 34:02, while Ashley Downes posted a time of 41:68. Bennet finished the 100-yard fly in 1:13:04, while teammate Zeinah Abdelsalam finished ahead of her, posting a time of 1:01.60 in the event. Bennett came out on top in the 50-yard fly, out touching her competitors to take first place with a time of 29:48. Abdelsalam and Archer also competed in the event, posting times of 32.13 and 32.92 respectively. 

The Lady Bobcats best event came in the 50-yard free, with Cook taking home the victory and Alayna Crane taking second. Bennet logged a time of 1:00.49 in the women’s 100-yard free, good enough to take home second-place. Crane finished just behind D&E’s Casey Hayford in the women’s 100-yard backstroke. Crane touched the wall with a time of 1:06.37 to just narrowly miss out on taking home the win. In the women’s 100-yard breaststroke, Williams posted a time of 1:18.56, while Downes recorded a time of 1:35.00. Choffin won the 500-yard free with a time of 5:41.95. 

The men’s team kicked things off with Marc Bennett taking second place in the 50-yard backstroke, barely edging out teammate Nick Gerosa with a time of 27:41. Jakob Bohland claimed second place in the men’s 200-yard free with a time of 2:02.79. Ben Esposito came away with a second-place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 30:05, with Bohland finishing on his tail with a time of 32:82. In the men’s 100-yard fly, Santiago de Stefano Cavazos registered a time of 1:01.60. Both Stephen Groves and Esposito competed in the men’s 100-yard free, posting times of 56.28 and 56.46 respectively. Marc Bennett finished second in the men’s 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.55. Esposito also finished with a time of 1:10.64 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Bennet also posted a time of 5:26.72 in the 500-yard free, with Gerosa completed the race in 6:03.42 to finish behind him. De Stefano Cavazos earned a time of 27.24 in the men’s 50-yard fly. 

 To conclude the individual events, Choffin secured first place in the 400 IM with a time of 5:08.04, while Schlor received a time of 5:28.32 and Williams a time of 5:58.77. On the men’s side, Santiago De Stefano Cavazos placed second with a time of 5:01.07, followed by Bohland with a time of 5:15.35. On the other hand, the Lady Bobcats’ 400-yard free relay team consisting of Archer, Abdelsalam, Crane, and Cook took second place with a final time of 4:07.10 to round out the last team events during the meet.

 Up next, the Bobcats are scheduled to return for a home meet versus Frostburg State on Friday, January 14. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
