BUCKHANNON — The West Virginia Wesleyan men’s tennis team lost their home opener on Tuesday against the Salem Tigers.
The Bobcats dropped a 5-2 result.
Wesleyan fell behind by a 2-1 score after the completion of doubles action.
The Wesleyan No. 1 doubles seed of Harry Simaiofordis and Taylor Papworth took down Gianfranco Germinara and Emanuel Nicodemo by a 6-2 score for the lone doubles win.
Wesleyan just missed out on taking the lead in doubles when Anthony McIntosh and Haruki Iizuka battled through five tiebreak points, but eventually lost a 7-6 decision to Anas Haddou and Zachary Laplante at No. 2.
Wesleyan fell at No. 3 and No.2 singles before Camillo Salvi pulled out a win for the Bobcats at No 4., besting Laplante, 6-2, 6-2.
The match was decided on Germinara beating Simaiofordis at No. 1 to give Salem their fifth victory.
That didn’t stop Wesleyan’s Nadal Nicolau Ferrer winning his match at No. 6 over Victor Lopez, 6-2, 6-3.
Salem improved to 1-1 on the season while the Bobcats dropped to 0-2 on the year.
Wesleyan will be back in action today traveling to Bluefield State for a 1 p.m. start.
