Wrestling Bucs win five of eight matches on Senior Night against South Harrison

Breagan Pearson (left) of the Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Bucs works over his South Harrison opponent during their dual outing last Thursday at the middle school. Pearson won by pinfall, one of five pinfall wins that the Bucs earned against the Hawks. The Bucs narrowly lost the dual outing by a 41-30 score.

TENNERTON – It was “Senior Night” for the Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Buccaneers when they faced South Harrison in a dual match last Thursday at the middle school gym.

The Bucs honored their two seniors – Jacob Smithson and Todd Cutlip.

“Both guys have had good careers at Buckhannon-Upshur,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jacob Orr. “It’s always a shame to see these guys go. You spend three to four years with these guys, and as a coach, you grow to love them as your own. Knowing that this is the last time they will wrestle at home tugs at the heart strings a little. Jacob and Todd have played a role in the younger guy’s success over their time here. I appreciate the work and the love of the sport they have.”

The Bucs lost the match by a 41-30 score having to forfeit six weight classes, but they went 5-3 on the mat where matches were decided.

All five of the Bucs’ wins came via a pinfall.

Getting the pins for the Bucs were Julius Hobbs (126 pounds), Breagan Pearson (145), Luke Bohnsack (152), Smithson (170) and Alex Bennett (220).

The Bucs will be back in action Saturday at the Brooke Classic.
