TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Buccaneers opened their season last Thursday in a dual meet with the visiting Lewis County Minutemen.
The Bucs stared the season on a winning note as they downed the Minutemen by a 35-28 decision.
The Bucs won six matches.
Sheldon Zirkle (152 pounds) and Luke Bohnsack won (160) won by forfeit, Nathan Cornett (138) won by a major decision, Aidan Wilson (113) won by a 19-4 technical fall and Trevur Randolph (145) and Jacob Smithson (170) both won their matches by pinfall.
“This is always a fun match up to start the season,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jacob Orr. “It gives us a good gauge of where we are at the beginning of the season. The coaching staff always stresses to the guys that wins and losses at this point of the season don’t matter. We go out, open the season, and have fun and try different stuff. If you fail, it’s no big deal, that’s how we learn.”
The Bucs were slated to compete in the John Marshall duals this past weekend and will head to Cabell Midland on Friday.
“We are super excited for this season,” concluded Orr. “We have a wide range of talent this year. All the guys are working hard, and good things are going to happen this season.”
