TENNERTON – It was a busy, yet successful two days for the Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Buccaneers last Thursday and Friday in a pair of quad meets.

On Thursday during the Bucs lone home meet of the year, they recognized their two seniors — Austin McCartney and Tyler Cutright — prior to the start of the event.

Once the wrestling action started, the Bucs went out and took care of business.

They blanked Elkins (72-0), downed Moorefield (56-24) and knocked off Fairmont Senior by the narrowest of margins (40-39) for a perfect 3-0 record.

Then on Friday, they  traveled to Kingwood for a regional quad with Preston, Brooke and University.

The Bucs went 2-1 dominating Preston (57-16) and Brooke (51-24) while falling to University (45-18). University won the quad with a perfect 3-0 record.

“Austin McCartney and Tyler Cutright are the lone two seniors that lead the wrestling team,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jacob Orr. “I can’t say enough about these two guys, they are both great leaders and are intricate parts of our program. As a coach, I couldn't ask for two better gentlemen to be a part of our program. Both of these two gentlemen are going to be very successful in life no matter which direction they go.”

Both seniors had a successful two days on the mat as Cutright (138 pounds) went a perfect 6-0 and McCartney (126) compiled a 5-1 record.

“What I’ll miss most about Austin is he is a very genuine kid with a super heart,” Orr said. “He wants the best for his teammates and his ability to push the other guys in the room. What I’ll miss most about TC is he is a true leader and he leads by example.

“These two guys have spent the last four years beating the crap out of each other in the room, this helps the intensity of practice, one minute it looks like they are fist fighting the next minute they are high-fiving each other and laughing with one another. They are two special kids that we will miss.”

Breagan Pearson (145) and Jacob Smithson (160) each had a perfect two days as both wrestlers went 6-0.

Aiden Wilson (106) posted a perfect 3-0 record on Thursday before falling to an illness on Friday and did not compete at the Preston quad.

Julius Hobbs (120), Tucker Hurst (132) and Alex Bennett (195) all compiled 5-1 records while Trevor Randolph (113), Dominic Tenney (170) and Todd Cutlip (285) all went 3-3 while Nathan Allen (152) posted a 1-5 mark.

The 5-1 mark left the Buccaneers with a 20-13 record overall in dual events.

The Bucs will be back in action in the two-day 2019 Winner’s Choice Wrestling Tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Fairmont Senior Field House.

Friday’s action will begin at 1 p.m. and Saturday will see the wrestlers take to the mat at 10 a.m.
