Wrestling Bucs go 4-0 at Lewis County and home meet

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Buccaneers continue to pile up the wins as they wrestled in a pair of tri-matches last week going a perfect 4-0.

Despite missing some key starters last Tuesday in a tri-match at Lewis County, the Bucs downed the host Minutemen by a 39-30 score and beat Frankfort by a 54-16 score.

The Bucs then hosted Morgantown and Philip Barbour and picked up two more wins Saturday afternoon.

The Bucs got a key 36-30 win over regional foe Morgantown and then cruised past Philip Barbour by a 54-12 score.

The Bucs went 16-4 on the mat at Lewis County.

Earning perfect 2-0 records were Julius Hobbs (132 pounds), Nathan Cornett (138 pounds), Breagan Pearson (145 pounds), Trevur Randolph (152 pounds), Luke Bohnsack (160 pounds) and Ball (182 pounds).

Jeremiah Burkhammer (113 pounds), Liam Garcia (120 pounds), Trevor Waycaster (170 pounds), and Joel Hershman (285 pounds) all went 1-1.

“We were without some starters due to injuries, but we were still able to win both of the dual match-ups,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jacob Orr. “I thought Burkhammer wrestled well and put together a solid match in win over his Lewis County opponent as I bumped him up to the 113-pound division.”

The Bucs went 16-4 on the mat at their home meet with six wrestlers going a perfect 2-0.

They were Garcia, Hobbs, Pearson, Randolph, Alex Bennett (220 pounds) and Hershman.

Breaking even at 1-1 were Cornett, Bohnsack, Waycaster and Ball.

“Waycaster, for a first-year sophomore is really starting to come on and figure out some things,” remarked Orr. “He put together a couple of really good matches with a first-period pin in his first match, and his last match, he was mounting a solid comeback but simply ran out of time. Ball, the first-year freshman stepped up to fill a hole in the line-up due to an injury and he was crucial in the team win over regional opponent Morgantown. Hershman also had a really good showing on the mat on Saturday. He put together a solid performance against a regional opponent from Morgantown.”

The Bucs will host a quad today and then prep for the Big 10 Conference Tournament this weekend at Preston High School.

“I’m really proud of the work the boys are putting in, you can see the strides they are making even in this short, abbreviated season,” concluded Orr.
