Wrestling Bucs finish 2-1at UHS quad

MORGANTOWN – The No. 4 Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Buccaneers went 2-1 in a road quad Saturday afternoon at University High School.

In a quad featuring three regional opponents for the Bucs, they downed Preston by a 45-24 score and Brooke by a 54-18 count but dropped a 44-27 decision to University.

The action left the Bucs of head coach Jacob Orr 5-1 overall in head-to-head matches.

As a team, the Bucs piled up 24 wins against their three opponents with six wrestlers going a perfect 3-0.

Going a perfect 3-0 for the Bucs were Aidan Wilson (113 pounds), Liam Garcia (120 pounds), Tucker Hurst (126 pounds), Julius Hobbs (132 pounds) Breagan Pearson (145 pounds) and Alex Bennett (220 pounds).

“Pearson has started off his senior campaign with a 6-0 record, dominating three regional opponents this weekend,” stated Orr. “Bennett is wrestling really well so far. He had some really solid matches and he had a big win over a regional opponent from Preston.”

Going 2-1 for the Bucs were Nathan Cornett (138 pounds) while picking up one win were Sheldon Zirkle (160 pounds), Luke Bohnsack (170 pounds), Oscar Blonn (182 pounds) and Joel Hershman (285 pounds).

Landon Zirkle went winless at the 152-pound weight class, but Orr applauded his effort.

“Landon stepped up and filled a spot due to a guy being out sick and wrestled 15 pounds above his natural weight,” stated Orr.

The Bucs will return to the mat today when they host a quad with Wheeling Park, St. Albans and Cabell Midland.
