Wrestling Bucs face some of the state’s best last week

TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling head coach Jacob Orr brought into some of the best teams in the state for a home quad last Tuesday for his Buccaneers to compete against.

They welcomed No. 2 Wheeling Park, No. 5. St. Albans and unranked but traditional power Cabell Midland.

The No. 4 Bucs were competitive against all three teams but came up short in the scoring.

The Bucs fell to St. Albans, 46-37, dropped a 42-36 decision to Wheeling Park and lost a 41-33 contest to Cabell Midland.

“This was probably one of the most competitive quads that Buckhannon-Upshur has ever hosted,” noted Orr. “It was a meat grinder for sure.”

Four Bucs walked away from the quad with perfect 3-0 records.

They were Aidan Wilson (113 pounds), Tucker Hurst (126 pounds), and Julius Hobbs (132 pounds) and Breagan Pearson (145 pounds).

“Hurst is wrestling really well right now and beating so many top competitors,” stated Orr.

The other two Bucs with winning records were Luke Bohnsock (170 pounds) and Alex Bennett (220) who both posted 2-1 marks.

The Bucs followed that up traveling to Parkersburg this past Saturday for a tri-outing with host Parkersburg and Riverside.

The Bucs defeated both foes, downing Parkersburg by a 37-36 score and downing Riverside, 49-26.

“I think this was the first time that Buckhannon-Upshur beat Parkersburg in a dual in our wrestling history,” remarked Orr.

Seven Bucs went a perfect 2-0 – Wilson (113 pounds), Liam Garcia (120 pounds), Hobbs (132 pounds), Nathan Cornett (138 pounds), Pearson (145 pounds), Bohnsock (160 pounds), and Bennett (220 pounds).

“Garcia stepped up this weekend and wrestled really well beating a returning state placer in dominating fashion,” said Orr.

The action left the Bucs with a 7-4 dual match record.

The Bucs will take to the mat twice this week.

They will visit Weston today for a quad against Lewis County, Bridgeport and Frankfort and then they will return home Saturday hosting Morgantown and Washington and possibly a fourth team.
