Woodworking shop provides fuel for fire

BUCKHANNON — Fire that broke out in a woodworking shop behind 182 Rohr Ave. destroyed the shop but did not spread to other buildings including the main home.

The Buckhannon Fire Department, Adrian Volunteer Fire Department and Washington District Volunteer Fire Company were paged at 10:22 a.m., according to BFD captain J.B. Kimble.

The BFD arrived on scene at 10:28 a.m. — just six minutes after the initial page — but found the shop was already engulfed in flames.

“It was fully engulfed,” Kimble said.

Although the wood shop was a total loss, firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading on to nearby structures including the main residence.

“There was another outbuilding and the house was an exposure and we protected the exposures,” Kimble said. “It was under control in about 15 minutes.”

Firefighters remained on scene about an hour.

The cause of the fire  was not known but is not considered suspicious, according to Kimble.

Kimble also thanked Buckhannon Water Department employees who assisted at the scene.

Upshur County EMS responded as a precaution.
