Woman faces felony over candy

Could serve 10 years in jail for allegedly taking two bags of candy

BUCKHANNON —A Buckhannon woman has been arrested for allegedly shoplifting from Sheetz.

Shellina Asbury, 39, allegedly concealed two bags of candy in her purse, according to the criminal complaint from Upshur County Magistrate Court.

Patrolman Joseph Barcus responded to the complaint and was advised by a manager that a female, later identified as Asbury, took the candy from the store. After Barcus confronted Asbury, she allegedly took her purse outside and placed it inside a vehicle with the candy still inside, but then went inside and paid for other merchandise before leaving the premises.

Asbury has two prior convictions for shoplifting in February and October 2016, making this arrest for shoplifting third or subsequent offense, a felony.

Magistrate Mike Coffman set bond at $5,000.

If convicted, Asbury faces a $500 to $5,000 fine and confinement in the penitentiary for one to 10 years with at least one year in confinement.
