Wesleyan’s Taylor earns MEC weekly football honors


BRIDGEPORT — Five players were recognized by the Mountain East Conference for their performance in week one of the spring football season.

UNC Pembroke’s Josh Jones and Notre Dame’s Tabyus Taylor shared Offensive Player of the Week honors, NDC’s Bryce Shepphert is the Defensive Player of the Week, and West Virginia Wesleyan’s Devin Taylor and Notre Dame’s Tanner Harding shared Special Teams Player of the Week.

Jones, a junior from Wilmington, N.C., paced UNCP to its first MEC win by completing 26-of-32 passes for 350 yards and four touchdowns. He connected his first eight passes of the game, and then 13 of his final 14. His completion percentage (.813) is the sixth-highest percentage in school history.

Taylor, a junior from Hopewell, Va., needed just nine carries to rush for 177 yards and four touchdowns as the NDC won its opener, 70-7, over West Liberty. He averaged nearly 20 yards per carry in the victory.

Shepphert, a sophomore from Stow, Ohio, helped lead a defensive unit that held West Liberty to just seven points. He intercepted a pass and returned it for 37 yards for a touchdown and broke up two others.

Harding, a senior from Gahanna, Ohio, matched an MEC record with 10 extra points in a win over West Liberty. Taylor, a native of Upper Marlboro, Md., had an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as the Bobcats fell on the road at West Virginia State.
