Wesleyan’s run in MEC Tournament ends at the hands of Frostburg State

Lady ‘Cats no-hit by West Liberty in opener but beat Charleston, 5-0

SALEM (Va.) – West Virginia Wesleyan saw their run end in the MEC Tournament at the hands of Frostburg State by a 2-1 score in an elimination game on Friday.

The Lady ‘Cats were no-hit in their opener against West Liberty on Thursday dropping a 3-0 game but they bounced back to knock off Charleston by a 5-0 score later that day.

Wesleyan ended their year with a 20-13 record.

In the opener with West Liberty, Makenzie Amend pitched the no-hitter walking just one while striking out 11.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Kat Donzella hit a solo home run.

Donzella hurt the Lady ‘Cats again in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double making it a 3-0 game.

Abagail O’Shields pitched well for Wesleyan but suffered the loss.

She went all six innings and gave up one earned run on eight hits while striking out three.

In their second game Thursday with Charleston, the game remained tied at 0-0 until the sixth inning when Wesleyan scored twice.

Kennedy Cowart and Lauryn King each had ground out RBIs to stake Wesleyan to that 2-0 lead.

Wesleyan added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh with Molly Osborne hitting a one-run single, Brooke Clark hitting a ground out RBI and Grace Smith hitting a one-run single to wrap up the scoring.

Wesleyan had six hits with Smith leading the way with two.

O’Shields pitched a strong game going all seven innings giving up just four hits and striking out two.

All the scoring in the Frostburg State game happened in the third inning.

Wesleyan scored when Grace Smith hit a single up the middle scoring Grace Hightower.

Frostburg State scored their two runs when Taylor McCarty hit a two-run single for the game-winner.

Wesleyan had seven hits with Smith and Cowart each getting two.

O’Shields (14-6) went all six innings and gave up one earned runs on seven hits while striking out six.
