Wesleyan swimmers take runner-up honors at OWU

DELAWARE (Ohio) – The West Virginia Wesleyan men’s and women’s swim teams turned in solid performances this weekend in the ninth annual Ohio Wesleyan Corbiere-Merion Invitational.

Both teams took runner-up honors to Ohio Wesleyan.

On the men’s side, Wesleyan totaled 761 points while Ohio Wesleyan scored 815.

Davis & Elkins was third with 646 points and Notre Dame was fourth out of the seven teams with 567 points.

Ohio Wesleyan won the women’s team title with 963 points while the Lady ‘Cats were second with 747.5 points.

Davis & Elkins was third with 701 and Notre Dame was again fourth out of seven teams with 425 points.

The Wesleyan men won four individual titles and took two relay wins.

Arthur Assfeld recorded a trio of wins for the Bobcats as he took first in the  200-yard freestyle (1:42.67), the 100-yard freestyle (45.95) and the 50-yard freestyle (21.20)

Nathan Swalley claimed the other first as he took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.84).

Two relay teams were victorious as the 400-yard medley squad of Assfeld, Dominik Schopper, Swalley and Logan Knoyer claimed victory as did the 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Assfeld, Michael McAlpine, Schopper and Knoyer.

Runner-up honors went to Knoyer in the 100-yard butterfly (53.82) and McAlpine in the 100-yard backstroke (55.02).

On the relay side, the 200-yard medley foursome of McAlpine, Schopper, Swalley and Marc Bennett took second as did the 400-yard freestyle team of Knoyer, Schopper, McAlpine and Assfeld and the 800-yard freestyle foursome of Assfeld, McAlpine, Dan Williams and Knoyer.

Taking thirds for the men were McAlpine in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.98) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.62), Schopper in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.89) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.86) and Michael Mugarza in the 200-yard IM (1:59.84).

The women won two titles.

Kay Lange won an individual championship in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.42) while the 400-yard medley relay team of Sarah Noll, Lange, Emily Kroll and Rylee Jackson took a first for with a time of 4:12.49.

Jackson earned a trio of seconds – in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.00), the 100-yard freestyle (53.37) and the 50-yard freestyle (24.49).

Earning seconds in relays were the 400-yard freestyle team of Morgan Choffin, Anna Puitgvert, Lange and Jackson.

Picking up thirds were Alyssa Serrano in the 200-yard IM (2:22.48), Choffin in the 400-yard IM (5:08.24) and Ashton Cole in the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.54),

Taking relay thirds were the 200-yard medley unit of Noll, Serrano, Choffin and Puigvert, the 800-yard freestyle team of Cole, Choffin, Lange and Jackson and the 200-yard freestyle team of Jackson, Puigvert, Cook and Lange.

The invitational wrapped up the fall portion of the Wesleyan schedule.

Both teams will return to the pool Saturday, Jan. 12 when they host Davis & Elkins in a Battle of the Hills event.

The meet will get underway at 1 p.m.
