Wesleyan softball starts season with 1-3 mark

West Virginia Wesleyan’s Brooke Clark eyes up a pitch during game one of their doubleheader with Concord last week in their 2021 season opener. The Lady ‘Cats had their season delayed two weeks by COVID-19 protocols. Wesleyan is off to a 1-3 start to the season.

BUCKHANNON – A two-week delay to the start of their season due to COVID-19 concerns put the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team behind the rest of the Mountain East Conference when they were finally able to take the field last Friday against the Concord Mt. Lions.

Concord already had 12 games under their belt when they arrived at Culpepper Field on Friday and walked away with a pair of close victories over the Lady Bobcats.

They took game one in extra innings by a 2-1 score and took the second game of the doubleheader by a 7-4 count.

Likewise, when Glenville State came into town for a twin bill on Saturday, the Pioneers had already played 17 games.

Wesleyan’s Abagail O’Shields threw a complete-game, five-inning no-hitter in the first game that Wesleyan won by a 9-0 score, but Wesleyan dropped the second outing to the Pioneers, 7-5.

The action left head coach Steve Warner’s squad with a 1-3 record.

In Friday’s opener, runs were at a premium in the extra-inning affair.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Sarah Thompson hit a solo home run over the left field fence.

Wesleyan tied it in the bottom of the seventh when Brooke Clark hit a sacrifice fly scoring Lauren Niglio from third base.

Concord scored the winning run in the top of the ninth when Sarah Thompson singled home Laura Thompson with a shot to right field.

Wesleyan put runners on the corners in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to get the tying run home.

Both teams had six hits with Lauryn King leading the Wesleyan offense with two.

Shields went all nine innings for Wesleyan in the circle as she gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out five.

Game two saw Concord score a run in the top of the first but in the bottom of the second Kelley Bourne hit a solo home run and Grace Smith and Kennedy Cowart each hit one-run singles to give Wesleyan a 3-1 lead.

Jenna Witt hit a two-run home run for Concord tying the game at 3-3, but Bella Posey singled home Destiny Alvarado in the bottom of the inning to return the lead back to Wesleyan, at 4-3.

A one-run triple by Concord’s Darby Fitzpatrick in the top of the fifth inning tied the game again at 4-4.

A two-out error by Wesleyan in the top of the seventh opened the door for Concord to score three unearned runs in the inning and allowed them to escape with a 7-4 win.

Wesleyan outhit Concord by a 12-9 margin with Smith collecting three hits to place the Lady Bobcat offense.

Paige Maltby suffered the loss for Wesleyan as she didn’t give up an earned run in two innings of relief but gave up two hits and two walks.

In Saturday’s first game with Glenville State, Shields was in complete control striking out five in her no-hit gem.

Wesleyan gave her all the support she needed in the bottom of the first with three runs on a Kennedy Cowart two-run double and an RBI ground out by Alvarado.

Wesleyan chased across four runs in the bottom of the second getting a two-run double from King, a ground RBI from Alvarado and scoring a run on a Glenville State error.

That treated the Lady Bobcats to a 7-0 lead.

Megan Osborne tripled home Posey in the third inning and then Posey singed home Megan McMackin in the fourth inning to give Wesleyan a 9-0 advantage.

The game was called in the fifth inning on the mercy rule.

In the nightcap, Glenville State raced out to a 4-0 lead after one inning, but Wesleyan tied it with four runs in the bottom of the third behind a one-run single from King and a bases loaded three-run double from Posey.

Glenville State answered right back with three runs in the top of the fourth for a 7-4 lead.

Wesleyan was able to make it a 7-5 game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI ground out by Shelby Kennedy but couldn’t get any closer the rest of than contest.

King led the 10-hit Wesleyan attack with three hits.

Shields suffered the loss tossing 2 1/3 innings of relief. She gave up two earned runs on four hits and struck out one.

Wesleyan will return to action Friday hosting Alderson Broaddus in a twin bill at 1 p.m. and then remain at home Saturday and host Notre Dame College in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
