PHILIPPI – The West Virginia Wesleyan lacrosse team had their best offensive showing of the year, but it wasn’t enough to get them past the homestanding Alderson Broaddus Battlers Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action.
Wesleyan, who had scored just nine goals in their first three games combined, dropped a 19-11 decision to the Battlers.
Alderson Broaddus scored two goals in the first minute of action, but Wesleyan’s Victoria Sisson scored a goal three minutes in with the assist going to Iris Kolenich to make it a 2-1 game.
Down 5-1, Sisson scored again at the 24:15 mark taking a feed from Kolenich, and after a Battler goal by Bailey Fedun, Kolenich got into the scoring act herself with an unassisted goal making it a 6-3 contest with 18:40 left in the opening half.
Alderson Broaddus started to pull away with six straight goals for a 12-3 lead.
Wesleyan ended the half on a strong note scoring three of the final four goals getting a pair of scores from Sisson and one from Lauren Bolen as they trailed by seven at the intermission, at 13-6.
Fedun and Kolenich traded goals to start the second half and Ashley Kress put one in for the Battlers to put Wesleyan down, 15-7.
Wesleyan rallied with four straight goals, two by Kolenich and two by Sisson to pull to within four, at 15-11, with 13 minutes remaining.
Wesleyan unfortunately couldn’t get any closer as the Battlers ended the game on a 4-0 run.
Sisson led the Wesleyan attack with six goals while Kolenich tallied four.
Leslie Diaz and Brooke Dinehart each had five goals for Alderson Broaddus.
Wesleyan was outshot by a 50-19 margin.
Wesleyan committed 27 turnovers while the Battlers were guilty of 22.
Alderson Broaddus improved to 1-4 on the season while Wesleyan dropped to 0-4.
The Lady Bobcats will be back in action Thursday at Charleston for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
