Wesleyan comes up short in battle with unbeaten Pioneers, 106-85

BUCKHANNON – You could call it a game of runs when the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats and Glenville State Pioneers met Saturday evening in a Mountain East Conference contest at Rockefeller Center.

Both teams had dominating moments during the game, but when the smoke had cleared, the Bobcats came up short of a 106-85 score.

Wesleyan was the first team to go on a run as they started the contest with the first 10 points of the game.

Ross Young made a jumper, Daylin Lee went inside for a lay-up, Young then slammed one home, and Jaylin Reed made consecutive lay-ups giving Wesleyan that 10-0 advantage with 2:25 gone for the first-half clock.

A Cameron Ramage basket kept Wesleyan up by four, at 16-12, with 13:29 remaining in the first half, but now it was the Pioneers’ turn for a run as they scored the next 11 points for a 23-16 advantage at the 10-minute mark.

Young interrupted the run with a dunk making it 23-18, but Glenville State went on a 9-0 run this time putting Wesleyan down by a 14, at 32-18.

Still down by 14 with 2:21 left in the first half, at 46-32, Wesleyan ended the period on a 9-0 run of their own.

Young had another dunk, Braeden McGrew went into the paint for a lay-up on a fastbreak, Young popped in a jumper and McGrew uncorked a three-pointer to bring Wesleyan to within five, at 46-41 at the intermission.

Lee unleashed a trey for Wesleyan to return the lead back to the Bobcats at 49-48 with 3:15 gone in the second half.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Ramage put Wesleyan ahead by three-points, at 62-59, with 11:21 remaining.

Glenville State went on another run 9-0 for a 68-62 advantage, but McGrew ended the run with a pair of free throws putting Wesleyan down by four, at 68-64, with 9:16 left in the game.

Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer as Glenville State dominated the final nine minutes of the contest.

Wesleyan’s biggest deficit ballooned to 23 points with 1:19 left, at 102-79 and the went on to fall by 21.

Glenville State had five players reach double digits with Hegel Augustin leading the way with 24 points while John Williams contributed 20 and Nick Edwards 19.

Glenville State improved to 4-0 on the season and 4-0 in the MEC.

Reed paced Wesleyan with 21 points while Young added 20.

Lee had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss dropped Wesleyan to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in the MEC.

The Bobcats will be back in action Wednesday when they play host to West Virginia State at 7:30 p.m. in a conference battle.
