Wesleyan baseball team falls to 1-9 during Florida spring break trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Hard times continued for West Virginia Wesleyan’s Bobcats here last week as they neared the end of their spring break schedule.

They dropped a 14-4 decision to the Malone (Ohio) Pioneers Wednesday and tumbled to the Ashland (Ohio) Eagles in a doubleheader Thursday, 12-3 and 9-2, to see their record fall to 1-9.

They were to have battled Tiffin (Ohio) Friday and were to have closed out their Florida stay Saturday, facing Saint Anselm (N.H.) and Malone again.

In their clash with Malone on Wednesday, the Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead on a walk, a hit batsman, a passed ball, Nate Cobb’s single to right field, and back-to-back ground-outs by Matt Noel and Damien Maglione.

They picked up a solo marker in the second frame, with Todd Ropp rapping a single to left, and Turner Hill, Zach Mottice and Joe Crank walking to force the run in.

Malone made it 6-0 with two in the fourth. Hill walked and Cobb moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Both scored on Crank’s bunt sacrifice.

The Bobcats did all their scoring in the fifth. Eric Forbrick belted a lead-off two-bagger, advanced on Nick Grotti’s ground-out, and after Kyle Kania walked, Josh Jano reached on an error to allow Forbrick to cross. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Greg Smith’s single to left. Wyatt Adkins blasted a triple to center field to plate the final marker.

The Pioneers chased three home in the sixth on a walk, an error and singles by Noel, Andy Fletcher and Ropp.

They finished with a five-run seventh, using a walk, a hit batsman, doubles by Cobb and Maglione, and singles by Zach Mottice, Jacob Mottice and Ropp.

Adkins had two of Wesleyan’s five hits.

Julio Medina started and worked 5 2/3 innings, surrendering nine hits and nine runs, walking eight and fanning two. Dominic Castello gave up five hits and five runs, walked one and whiffed one in two-thirds of an inning.

In the first game with Ashland, the Eagles romped into a 7-0 lead with three runs in the first and four in the second.

The ‘Cats plated two in the top of the third. Castello singled to right-center, went to third on Dylan Frye’s double to left-center, and tagged up and scored on Smith’s sacrifice fly to left. Frye crossed on a wild pitch.

Ashland answered with four in the bottom half and made it 12-2 with one in the fourth.

Wesleyan got its other marker in the fifth on singles by Kolby Wolf and Frye, and a wild pitch.

Frye had two of Wesleyan’s five hits.

David McLeod started on the mound and took the loss, with Takahashi Brine and Sean Cliff seeing relief work.

The Bobcats grabbed the lead in the second contest with their two runs in the first stanza when Antonio Vega singled down the left field line and Forbrick homered to right-center field.

The Eagles tallied five in the second canto, one in the third and sixth, and two in the seventh.

The ‘Cats collected seven hits, with Forbrick and Vega belting two apiece.

Jake Bishop suffered the defeat, with Cliff relieving.
