WDES kicks off Summer Learning Academy with a “super” celebration

BUCKHANNON — On Monday evening, Washington District Elementary School celebrated the beginning of this year’s Summer Learning Academy with over 200 students, family members, and staff.

WDES called all “Superheroes” to attend the kick-off rally where they had the opportunity to meet with Batman (John Buckland) and even see his Batmobile! Batman provided a life lesson, encouraging and empowering the students—a.k.a. Superheroes. Batman’s motivational speech talked about the four steps to greatness: never give up, always do the right thing, help other people, and never be a bully.

Everyone also got the chance to enjoy cotton candy, hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, snocones, slushees, and soft serve ice cream. Students took part in fun competitions and games, winning prizes like Batman kites, cups and action figures, as well as books, pogo jumpers, a drone, and a Polaroid camera. Students were also each given a copy of the book “Broken Toy Hero,” which was written by Mr. Buckland.

WDES Principal Gabrielle Rhodes shared her excitement as she explained, “We are trying to build a sense of community and wanted this to be an opportunity to bring the school and the community together for an important message. We want our students to achieve greatness. Batman wanted to support us and encourage the children to be a true superhero.”
