TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Lady Bucs came out strong in their varsity volleyball match-up with Philip Barbour’s Lady Colts here Monday night, but had a communication breakdown and ended up dropping a 2-0 decision.
Hodge’nay Henderson staked Buckhannon to an early lead with her serving, and Kendall Defibaugh was aggressive at the net with four kills, but they wound up losing the back-and-forth first set by a 25-23 count. They tumbled in the second set, 25-9.
“Going into the second set, I let the girls know we were right there, but our errors are what hurt us, coming from not communicating and letting the ball drop between players,” coach Sheena Westfall said. “Once we got ourselves down, we were never able to regain confidence or control.”
Henderson led the Little Lady Bucs in aces with four, with Kendall Bohnsack, Chloe Brown and Grace Snider nailing one each.
Abby Hurst racked up a team-high eight digs. Defibaugh recorded six, Snider collected four and Bohnsack had one.
Defibaugh notched four kills, with Henderson and Hurst contributing one apiece.
Henderson also added five assists to her stats.
“This group of girls has a lot of potential and do great things in practice,” Westfall said. “We just need to start showing up for games and getting the job done that I know they can do.”
The loss dropped the Little Lady Bucs to 0-2. They will travel to Elkins Monday to tangle with the Lady Green Hornets, and return home to face Belington Lady Hawks Tuesday. They were to have gone to Weston Tuesday night to battle Robert L. Bland’s Lady Patriots.
