MORGANTOWN – “The first game of the season is always a test,” remarked coach Sheena Westfall after her Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Lady Bucs fell to Mountaineer (Morgantown) here last Wednesday in their varsity volleyball opener.
They dropped the first set by a 25-13 margin, and tumbled in the finale, 25-9.
“We did some good things, but the nerves and mistakes got the best of us,” she said. “We came out strong in the first set, but there was a change in momentum on a call and we were never able to turn ourselves around.
“The girls just never seemed to be able to settle down. We would make a mistake, and instead of forgetting about it, we let it effect us the rest of the set. Our communication broke down at times, which is key, and we weren’t able to run any plays off it.
“Ella McNeish, Grace Snider and Abby Hurst gave solid performances for us.”
Hurst led the Little Lady Bucs in digs with 10 and added an ace and a kill. Snider had three digs, three assists and two kills, and McNeish two aces, a dig and an assist.
Hodge’nay Henderson recorded two aces and two digs, Kendall Defibaugh had five digs and two kills, Ella Jeran and Kendall Bohsack each had three digs, and Chloe Brown chipped in with one dig.
The Little Lady Bucs will entertain Philippi’s Lady Bulldogs tonight, and travel to Weston Tuesday to battle Robert L. Bland’s Lady Patriots.
