BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat volleyball team put an end to their two-game slide in thrilling fashion Friday night when they hosted the Davis & Elkins Senators in a Mountain East Conference contest at Rockefeller Center.
Wesleyan outlasted Davis & Elkins in a five-set marathon battle winning 3-2.
The Lady Bobcats took the first set by a 25-22 margin but dropped the second set by a 25-21 score.
They rebounded to win the third set by a 25-19 score but couldn’t put away the Senators in the fourth set, dropping the extended set by a 28-26 score.
They came back to take the fifth and final set by a 15-9 score.
The win ended the two-game slide for Wesleyan and put Nancy Wheeler’s crew at 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the MEC.
It was the first loss of the season for Davis & Elkins as they fell to 3-1 both overall and in the conference.
Down in the first set by a 4-3 score, Wesleyan scored four straight points for a 7-4 lead, but Davis & Elkins countered with three straight points to even the score at 7-7.
Wesleyan was down by a 17-14 score but an ace from Autumn Molenhouse capped off a mini 3-0 run making it a 17-17 contest.
Wesleyan went down again by a 22-20 score but finished strong with five straight pointes ending the set on a kill by Anaya Hyman, for the five-point win.
Wesleyan held several three point leads on Davis & Elkins in the second straight, including a 14-11 advantage.
The Senators ran off four straight points for a 15-14 advantage.
Wesleyan trailed 23-21 but Davis & Elkins scored the final two points for a 25-21 win.
Wesleyan raced out to a 4-1 lead in the third set but Davis & Elkins scored 10 of the next 13 points for an 11-7 advantage.
The Lady Bobcats countered by taking five of the next six points for a 13-12 lead.
A kill by Michela Ayers put Wesleyan up by five, 20-15.
Davis & Ekins closed it to 22-19, but a pair of attack errors from the Senators and a kill by Ayers gave Wesleyan the 25-19 win.
Set four saw Wesleyan take a 9-7 lead but the Senators scored five straight for a 12-9 lead.
Wesleyan took the lead back on a kill by Joelle Lalla, at 18-17, and a Senator attack effort put Wesleyan ahead 22-18 but they were able to close out the visitors.
Leading at match point, at 24-19, the Senators scored six straight points for a 25-24 lead and were finally able to put the Lady ‘Cats down after scoring two straight with the game tied at 26-26.
The fifth set saw Wesleyan up 6-5 before they scored three straight points after a kill by Lalla that put them up 9-5.
Davis & Elkins scored two straight points, but Wesleyan answered with three consecutive points for a 12-7 advantage.
A kill by Hyman closed out the 15-9 win for Wesleyan.
Emily Doyle had 15 kills for Wesleyan while Lexis Tatum had 12.
Payton Hefner had a team-high 23 assists while Maddi Carpenter collected 21.
Autumn Molenhouse had a game-high 21 digs for the Lady ‘Cats.
Wesleyan will return to action today in a doubleheader with Glenville State.
The first contest will start at 5 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m.
