ELKINS – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat volleyball team played Davis & Elkins close in all three sets but were never able to get over that hump for a set victory in their regular-season finale Friday night at the McDonnell Center.
Wesleyan dropped the outing to the Senators – 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22.
The first set was tied at 8-8 before the Lady Bobcats rattled off three straight points capped off by an ace by Emily Doyle.
Wesleyan built their lead to 15-9 after an ace by Lauryn Antolock but Davis & Elkins countered with five of the next six points to draw to within two, at 16-14.
A kill by Doyle finished off a mini 3-0 run for Wesleyan hiking their lead to 19-14 and Wesleyan still lead by four, at 23-19 after a Senator attack error.
Davis & Elkins finished with a flourish though taking the final six points of the set for the 25-23 win.
Wesleyan never led in the second set but kept it close throughout.
It was tied at 7-7 before Davis & Elkins took four of the next five points for an 11-7 lead.
A kill by Lexis Tatum kept Wesleyan down by just one, at 20-19, but Davis & Elkins scored three straight points for a 23-19 lead.
Wesleyan scored two straight points to close it to a 23-21 contest, but the Senators tallied the final two points of the game.
An ace by Maddi Carpenter treated Wesleyan to an early 7-3 lead in the third set, but Davis & Elkins scored seven unanswered points for a 10-7 advantage.
They were still down by three, at 14-11, but a kill by Antolock, an ace by Kennedy Kuhns and an attack error from the Senators knotted the game at 14-14.
Davis & Elkins recaptured the lead with three straight points for a 17-14 lead, but Wesleyan responded with a 7-3 run for a 21-20 lead.
They couldn’t finish off the Senators as they took five of the next six points for the 25-22 win.
Doyle was the only Lady Bobcat to finish with double digit kills as they totaled 10 while hitting at a .556 clip.
Tatum added seven kills while Anaya Hyman chipped in with six.
Autumn Molenhouse paced the team in digs with 18 while Payton Hefner led the team in assists with 17.
Davis & Elkins ended their regular season with an 8-2 conference and overall mark. One of the two losses was to Wesleyan back on Feb. 19 at Rockefeller Center.
Wesleyan ended the regular season with a 6-4 mark in the MEC and a 6-4 mark overall.
The two teams will get reacquainted with each other today as they play each other in the First Round of the MEC Tournament.
The game will take place at Davis & Elkins at 7 p.m.
