Volleyball Lady ‘Cat struggles continue with losses to Concord, GSC

BUCKHANNON – The struggles of the West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball  squad continued this past weekend for head coach Nancy Wheeler and her team.

Hoping to make a move up the Mountain East Conference standings with two teams mired near the bottom of the standings, Wesleyan dropped contests to Concord on Friday and Glenville State Saturday.

Friday’s loss was especially frustrating as Wesleyan went up by a 2-0 score after taking the opening sets by a 25-23 and 25-21 scores.

Wesleyan was never able to finish off Concord as the Mt. Lions came back to win set three, 25-20, set four 25-18 and the fifth and final set, 15-10.

Wesleyan served up seven aces in the loss with Joelle Lalla getting three of them.

Jenny Lundy led the team in kills with 14 while Payton Hefner had a team-best 29 assists.

Abigail Anderson had 14 digs and Lalla led the team in blocks with six

Concord improved to 7-15 overall and 4-6 in the MEC.

Glenville State entered Saturday’s match with just three overall wins and were still looking for their first MEC win.

Glenville State came into Rockefeller Center and easily took the first two sets by 25-13 and 25-16 scores.

Wesleyan rebounded to win set three by a 25-12 score, but the Lady Pioneers finished off Wesleyan in set four by a 25-12 score.

Abby Wetzel and Kennedy Kuhns each had an ace for Wesleyan.

Lundy had a team-best 17 kills and 10 digs while Hefner had a team-high 23 assists.

Lalla had four blocks for Wesleyan.

Glenville State improved to 4-20 overall and 1-10 in the MEC.

The two losses dropped Wesleyan to 11th place in the 12-team division with a 5-18 record overall and a 2-9 mark in the MEC.

Wesleyan will look to end their seven-game losing streak this Friday when they host Fairmont State at 7 p.m.

They will remain at home Saturday morning and host Frostburg State at 10 a.m.

Both matches are MEC outings.

The Lady Bobcats have 10 more days left to rise into the top of the MEC standings for a potential spot in the conference’s post-season tournament.
