Volleyball Lady Bucs look to build off of 16-win season last year

McKenzie Reynolds will be the lone senior on the 2020 Buckhannon-Upshur volleyball team. The squad will begin their season this Wednesday at University.

TENNERTON – As Buckhannon-Upshur head volleyball coach Ashley Stanton settles into her third year as mentor of the program, she will look to build on last year’s 16-win season.

To improve on that mark though, she is going to have to rely on just one senior on the roster.

McKenzie Reynolds is the lone senior on this year’s roster and Stanton will be turning to her for leadership on the court.

“The team will be led this year by our only senior, McKenzie Reynolds,” stated Stanton. “We look forward to her offensive and defensive playing at the net.”

Behind Reynolds though is a strong junior class of 10 players that include Meghan Bailey, Kloey Chapman, Destiny Chidester, Allie Claypoole, Caroline Frye, Kaitlyn Hollen, Jada Kelley, Olivia McKisic, Cadence Ringer and Kaitlyn Shannon.

The roster also shows four sophomores – Kendal Currence, Catherine Neely, Tori Perkins, and Emily Sharp – along with three freshmen – Abigail Hurst, Genevieve Gregory and Grace Snider.

“I am looking forward to seeing what the girls have in store for myself and assistant coach Lisa Crites this season,” stated Stanton. “I think the greatest strength for the team this year is the overall cohesiveness and motivation of each individual player.”

Like every other team in the state, the Lady Bucs are adhering to the strict guide lines caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

”Our biggest challenge thus far this season has been keeping up with the ever-changing restrictions and guidelines due to COVID-19,” noted Stanton.

Right now the Lady Bucs have 31 regular-season matches lined up including a very tough slate of Big 10 Conference games.

*The Big 10 Conference is challenging as always,” remarked Stanton. “We play teams such as Bridgeport, RCB and Philip Barbour who are very skilled offensive teams.”

The Lady Bucs will open their schedule this Wednesday, Sept. 2 with a quad at University with Trinity and Clay-Battelle.

“I look forward to seeing what the season holds for us,” concluded Stanton. “I appreciate the work the girls put into every practice, and for a great assistant coach in Lisa Crites.”
