Volleyball Lady Bucs down Liberty and Preston

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur volleyball team ran their record to 6-2 after playing in the Nicholas County Tournament and a pair of road Big 10 clashes last week.

In the tournament format, the results of the Nicholas County tournament won’t affect the Lady Bucs overall record.

However, they went 1-2-1 in Nicholas County, falling to Independence and Herbert Hoover by 2-0 scores, they split two sets with Woodrow Wilson and beat Clay County, 25-22 and 25-19.

Returning to Big  10 Conference play, the Lady Bucs visited the Liberty Mountaineers and came away with a 3-1 win.

The Lady Bucs grabbed the first set by a 25-19 score but dropped the second set, 25-20. They came back to grab a pair of 24-14 wins in sets three and four. Shelby McDaniels recorded five aces in the win while McKenzie Reynolds had a team-high 12 kills.

McDaniels paced the team in digs with eight while Meghan Bailey had a team-high 19 assists.

“The girls played a great game against Liberty,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Ashley Hall. “It’s exciting to see their skills advancing as the season progresses.”

The Lady Bucs were pushed to five sets by Preston but won a hard-fought 3-2 decision.

Buckhannon-Upshur won the first set, 25-23, but dropped the next two sets – 25-19 and 25-13.

They rebounded to take the fourth set, 25-20, and won the deciding fifth set, 15-7.

“This was the first game of the year where the girls had to play five sets., Hall stated. “It shows their endurance and determination to finish with an overall win."

McDaniels recorded two three aces in the win while Abbie Vincent and Cara Benson had two apiece.

Reynolds led the team with seven kills while Vincent had five.

McDaniels had a tea-high 12 digs while Bailey had a team-high 17 assists.

The Lady Bucs were slated to play East Fairmont at home last Thursday, North Marion on Monday and at the Volley for Cure at Robert C. Byrd High School Tuesday.

They will return to action Tuesday as they host Lewis County at 7:30 p.m. and remain at home Thursday when they host University.
