Vincent breaks two regional marks; four Lady Bucs heading to states

STATE QUALIFIERS — Four Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs swimmers qualified for 10 events in the 2021 West Virginia State High School Championships next week at West Virginia University. They are, left to right: Cadence Vincent, Cameron Zuliani, Alayna Whitehair and McKenzie Reynolds.

SALEM – Cadence Vincent set two more records at the Region III Championships held at Salem University on Saturday for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc swimmers.

In her two individual events, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle ,Vincent took first place and broke regional records in both races.

She swam a record-breaking time of 23.55 in the 50-yard freestyle, winning the race by almost four full seconds. She also broke the Salem University pool record in the 50-yard freestyle.

In the 100-yard freestyle, she set a new mark of 51.43 winning the event by over five full seconds.

Cameron Zuliani took a pair of runner-ups for the Lady Bucs.

She placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.91 and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.18.

For their efforts, both Vincent and Zuliani were named to the All-Region III Swim Team.

The duo was also part of the talented 200-yard freestyle relay team that won a convincing race by almost seven seconds with a time of 1:43.78.

Joining Vincent on Zuliani on that relay team as always were  Alayna Whitehair and McKenzie Reynolds.

That same foursome took second place 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.96.

Individually, Whitehair had a pair of top-five finishes.

She took second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.93 and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a clocking of 1:15.83.

Reynolds took fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:03.99) and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (28.85) while Lillian Fetty had the other top 10 finish for the Lady Bucs, placing seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:20.11).

“We are very excited by the results of the regional meet,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Will Squires. “Our girls swam spectacularly well. Many swimmers achieved either season-best or lifetime-best times.”

The Lady Bucs took fourth overall in the team standings with 218 points.

Bridgeport won the team title with 341 points, Elkins placed second with 287 and Philip Barbour was third with 282.

The Lady Bucs will now turn their attention to the West Virginia State High School Championships at WVU on Tuesday with Vincent, Zuliani, Whitehair and Reynolds qualifying for eight overall individual events and two relay events.

“We are continuing our training through Monday and we are looking forward to even more improvement and impressive swims at the state meet.” concluded Squires.
