Vicentic records double-double as Bobcats down Urbana, 70-56


URBANA (Ohio) – They say you live by the three and die by the three.

For the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, they let the Urbana Blue Knights fall in love with the three-point shot and it wound up costing them as the Bobcats came back home with a 70-56 victory.

Urbana jacked up 34 three-pointers making just eight for only 23.5 percent.

The Blue Knights shooting woes helped Wesleyan to hold an opponent to under 65 points for the second straight game.

Dusan Vicentic led the Bobcat offense as he recorded a double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds.

Wesleyan was slow out of the gate down early by a 9-2 score but a 10-0 run capped by a lay-up by Anthony Garcia erased the start and gave the Bobcats a 12-9 lead with 13:32 left in the opening half.

Urbana answered with a 7-0 run for a 16-12 advantage at the 11-minute mark.

A pair of free throws by Luka Petrovic returned the lead back to Wesleyan, at 17-16, with 10 minutes remaining.

Matt Ashley made a free throw for Urbana to make it a 17-17 contest, but it was all Wesleyan the final nine minutes of the half.

The Bobcats went on a 7-0 run for a 24-17 lead with 6:34 remaining in the half.

A three-pointer by Clay Todd gave Wesleyan a 13-point lead, at 31-18, and they upped their lead to 14 at the break after a lay-up by Garcia at 37-23.

Mario Lacy started the second half for Urbana with a lay-up, but Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run capped by a three from Petrovic to up their lead to 17 points, at 44-27.

A 17-8 run by Urbana cut the deficit to single digits as Wesleyan’s lead was whittled down to eight points, at 52-44, with nine minutes remaining.

Wesleyan responded with a 7-0 run after a free throw by Vicentic to push their lead back to 15, at 59-44, with five minutes left.

Wesleyan saw their lead trimmed to 10, at 66-56, with 90 seconds remaining but Todd put down a dunk and Petrovic scored on a lay-up to wrap up the game.

The ‘Cats were over 50 percent from the floor making 30 of their 57 shots for 52.6 percent.

Petrovic added 13 points and nine assists for Wesleyan in the win.

Urbana was led by Tehree Horn who had 14 points while Lacy added 12.

Urbana dropped to 5-17 overall and 4-12 in the MEC.

Wesleyan won their second game in a row and three of their last four to improve to 9-13 overall and 8-8 in the MEC.

The Bobcats will return to action Thursday when they visit the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets for a league outing at 7:30 p.m.
