Upshur Stars recognized at BOE meeting

BUCKHANNON — During the Upshur County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, February 8 at Buckhannon- Upshur High School, students and counselors were recognized for their contributions to the school community.

National School Counseling Week is celebrated each year during the first full school week in February. The American School Counselor Association states, “school counseling week allows us to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.”

Multiple counselors were present at the meeting and Dr. Greenbrier Almond, a locally renowned professional in the field of psychiatry and BOE member, was especially proud of the moment and was happy to celebrate with those receiving their Upshur Stars award. The counselors present for awards were Ashley Woody, Jennifer Arisman, Larry Lance, Shauna Jones, Tanya Zickefoose, Wilson Harvey and Therapy Dog Ollie with handler Debbie Shapiro. The counselors recently went to Lewis County to help students with the loss of a fellow student.

Superintendent Dr. Sara Lewis-Stankus, announced that the counselors are “battle-tested, going into the field like soldiers.” In addition, she announced to the counselors, “We have special stars for you.” As counselors displayed the awards, the Upshur Star Awards read, “I knew I wanted to make a difference, so I became a school counselor.”

Two students were also recognized for their efforts during a medical emergency, involving a teacher at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School. Three additional students also assisted but were not present. Matthew Sisk, Upshur County Schools Director of Safety and Emergency Preparedness awarded Upshur Stars to Bailey Hurst and Brayden Wayts.

In addition, Katrina Tenney and Grace Queen were presented with their Upshur Star for contributing stunning artwork that has been displayed in the Central Office. Lastly, Senior Class President, Katie Pearson was presented with an Upshur Star for highly representing the student body of B-UHS.
