BUCKHANNON — Upshur County schools can boast not just one, but two West Virginia Art Education Association art teachers of the year
Heidi Thompson, art teacher at Buckhannon-Upshur School, and Virginia Hicks, art teacher at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle school, were honored Tuesday night by parents, administrators and board members for their accomplishment.
Thompson is being honored by the WVAEA as the Secondary Art Educator of the Year and Hicks as the Middle Level Art Educator if the Year.
Not even heavy rains could stop the festive mood at Tuesday night’s Upshur County Board of Education meeting honoring these teachers and 10 of their students.
Thompson noted a new program at the middle school to honor students of the week.
“We have so many fabulous sixth and seventh graders we decided to honor them throughout the year,” Hicks said. “Many of the students here tonight are students of the week. The others are some of my best students.”
“I’m so honored they showed up tonight,” Hicks added.
Thompson encouraged the students to keep up their interest in art.
“I’m looking forward to getting all of you in a few years,” she said.
She also noted the variety of art programs offered at the high school level including pottery, stained glass and photography among others.
“I think it speaks volumes about the quality of our art program here in Upshur County to have two teachers selected as art teachers of the year,” Superintendent of Upshur County Schools Dr. Sara Lewis-Stankus said. “Thank you for your work with your students.”
