Upshur County Youth Baseball Spring Season Recap

TENNERTON — Standings and results are in for the 2022 Upshur County Youth Baseball League’s Spring season. The young athletes that competed shined as a very competitive season unfolded in three separate age divisions: 6-and-under tee ball, 8-and-under baseball, and 12-and-under baseball. The league largely enjoyed balanced teams and exciting games that kept the race for the best record very interesting to monitor.

The UCYBS league, itself has been supported by a wonderful collection of sponsors and volunteers who dedicate themselves to the youth’s love of the sport. Coach and league organizer John Egress spoke about the 6-and-under tee ball Spring season, saying, “To me, the biggest takeaway from the 6-and-under tee ball season would be all the general baseball knowledge and skills the kids gained this Spring. There are several kids that will be able to make the transition to our 8-and-under division a lot easier now. The 6-and-under tee ball would like to thank the following coaches and team sponsors for making the Spring season such a success: Wright Roofing coached by John Egress, Ace Aggregates coached by Scott Baron, G&O Specialties LLC. coached by Greg Haney, Central Supply coached by Brianna Warner, and Appalachian Equipment Solutions coached by Jessica Koerner.

In the 8-and-under varsity division, competition was balanced from top to bottom, as coach Egress’ Century 21 team narrowly finished atop the standings with a 6-4 record, while coach Jordan Westfall’s JF Allen/CP Imagery team finished a close second with a 5-5 record and coaches Mike Childers and Luke Payne’s Local VFW team rounded out the list after posting a 4-6 record.

Egress spoke highly of the very competitive 8-and-under division, saying, “It was great seeing the competition level improve throughout the season and how the kids really battled it out to see who could finish the season with the best record. The balance of the teams was fantastic for the league and the overall competition each week kept everyone motivated and engaged.”

In the 8-and-under junior varsity division, coach Tyler Beaty’s JF Allen/CP Imagery finished with the best record with a 6-4 overall mark, followed closely by coach Bill Pastorious’ Century 21 team with a 5-5 record, and finally Jessica’s Koerner’s Local VFW squad that compiled a 4-6 record.

Egress praised the kids for their work ethic and willingness to learn and be coachable, saying, “It was great to see these kids develop into all around ball players from the tryouts in March until the end of the season. They improved by leaps and bounds and the process they made over the course of the season was very impressive.”

In the 12-and-under division, coach Ben Hall’s Wright Roofing team was a dominant force, compiling a near flawless 10-1 record. Coach Andrew McDaniels’ Westfall Farms “Just Cuttin’ Up” team finished second in the 12-and-under divisional race with a 7-3 record, while coach Danny Nicholson’s Woodford Propane team with a 2-8 record and coach Jerry Cochran’s Jenkins Ford team with a 1-10 overall record rounded out the 12-and-under standings.

Egress made mention of the younger than average age for the teams for this particular division saying, “It was great seeing our younger kids develop this season, we had a challenge this year because we were lacking a proper amount of 11 and 12 year old players, so we had to improvise and incorporate our 9 and 10 year old kids into the league.”

Egress continued, summing up his major takeaways from the season, as well as hinting at his league’s future plans, saying, “Overall for the season, we were able to upgrade our facilities and really engage our kids to love baseball. We hope to continue that into our Fall Ball season that will run from July 25 to October 8. We are currently accepting sign-ups at  We will also be holding a youth camp for ages 6 to 16 from July 11 to 13 at the Larry West Memorial baseball complex. I just want to thank everyone involved in our league for a great season, especially the league President Jordan Westfall, fellow board members, all the players and parents for always participating when we asked them to and our coaches and sponsors. I hope to see everyone in the Fall.”
