TENNERTON — The Record Delta recently sat down with the Upshur County Parks and Recreation Coordinator Jeremiah McCourt and Upshur County Schools Director of Wellness and Conditioning Eric Jett. On June 30, the pair discussed big plans for the upcoming triathlon, which is set to take place in August of 2022.
It has been at least six years since Upshur County’s last hosted a triathlon. Jett’s goals are to kickstart interest in the trails during the event, improve overall wellness for students and staff, and to present a concrete goal to have something to push themselves toward. “I engage in helping students get healthier and make better overall wellness choices to improve themselves,” stated Jett.
A “field day” was held on May 17, which went well. It included a mini track meet and emotional/mental health stations. First responders were also in attendance. With grades third, fourth and fifth in attendance, there were roughly 900 students participating. Upshur County also hosted The Wellness Cup, which saw Union Elementary taking the overall win.
“We want to generate general fitness all-year-round. You don’t have to wait for the weather to be nice in order to stay healthy,” expressed McCourt.
The 2022 Triathlon will be held on Saturday, August 6, at the Upshur County Recreational Trails. The event will include a 500-meter swim, a 12-mile bike and a 5K cross-country course.
This will also be a “sprint” Triathlon with different categories, including children, adult and team. With the team category, one person will bike, one will swim and the other will run.
The goal is to expand and add onto events each year. The Upshur County Recreational Park is over a 10-mile trail system that encompasses the Buckhannon-Upshur High School (B-UHS) Cross-Country course. Vendors will be available.
Early bird pre-registration discount is happening now through July 30. The registration fee is $50 per person and the early bird price is $40. Team prices are $75. Per current event regulations, no one under the age of 13 is allowed to participate.
The route will begin and B-UHS, exiting to the left and onto Lick Run Road, down Brushy Fork, past the Brushy Fork Event Center and then finishing at the high school.
Proceeds will go toward facility and other improvements. This triathlon serves as a mini fundraiser for the Upshur County Parks and Recreation Department.
Registration is currently open. Interested participants can register on the rec desk website at www.upshurcounty.recdesk.com.
