Upshur County Board of Education receives department reports December 14

BUCKHANNON — The Upshur County Board of Education met at Union Elementary School(UES) on Tuesday, December 14 to discuss reports from various departments.

Beginning the meeting, UES’s Principal Carol Clay presented their Faculty Senate and LSIC (Local School Improvement Committee) report as a video made by students and staff. The presentation highlighted exciting and unique things happening at UES, including: Christmas Around the World, the Social Studies/Science fairs, field trips, community involvement, Fire Safety with BFD, ice-cream trucks, grant securement, positive classroom climate, summer reading challenges and their Teacher of the Month program.

Following UES’s report, Treasurer and School Business Official Jeff Perkins gave a brief Finance Department update. He reviewed revenues and expenditures, budget journal entries and potential costs of online learning programs for students. Together, the board members approved a bid for snow removal, covering the maintenance at each Upshur County school location.

Next, Director of Curriculum and Maintenance Tim Derico updated the board on Upshur County School’s facilities, reporting on each roof leaks at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School and Buckhannon-Upshur High School repair. Derico and his crew are preparing for their Christmas Break projects, as this allows maintenance to the buildings without students present.

Matthew Sisk, Director of Safety and Emergency Preparedness, updated the board on current COVID-19 numbers. Thankful for low numbers, he announced that as of December 13, there are three positive staff cases, seven positive student cases and 60 active quarantines.

Kayla Yocum and Quinten Oldaker concluded department reports, announcing the distribution of earphones and headphones to all students K-12. The “Tools for Schools Fund” aided this purchase, along with Apple Pencils for K-2 students. Their next Apple Learning Session for teachers will take place on January 20. For more information, visit

The next BOE meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 11 at 6 p.m. at Tennerton Elementary School.
