Update: Upshur County receives 31 filings for candidacy


BUCKHANNON — Upshur County now has an official list of candidates vying for office during the May 2022 Primary Election.

The candidates were required to file for candidacy before the January 29 deadline. Currently there are 12 candidates hoping for a seat on the Upshur County Board of Education, while other offices include Magistrate, County Representative of the executive committee, County and City Clerk, County Commission and Conservative Director Supervisor.

The candidates, along with the filing office, are as follows:

Sam Nolte, of Buckhannon, for County Commission 1st district, Brian P. Gaudet, of Buckhannon, for Circuit Clerk, Carol J. Smith, of Buckhannon, for County Clerk, Mark Davis, of Buckhannon, for Magistrate unexpired term division 1,Kay Hurst, of Buckhannon, for Magistrate unexpired term division1, Alan M. Suder, of Buckhannon, for Magistrate unexpired term division 2, Lindon “Lenny” Stone, of Buckhannon, for Magistrate unexpired term division 2, Douglas D. Roberts, of Buckhannon, for County Rep. Executive committee M 2nd district, Carl “Robbie” Martin, of Buckhannon, for County Rep. Executive committee M 2nd district, Jeani Hawkins, of Tallmansville, for County Rep. Executive committee F 2nd district, LeVera Jean Gillum, of Buckhannon, for County Rep. Executive committee F 2nd district, Gary Connell, of Buckhannon, for County Rep. Tenney, of Tallmansville, for Conservation District Supervisor.

This election will also fill two city council seats. The candidates vying for those spots are David McCauley, Sheila Lewis-Sines, David Thomas, Jim Valenson and Laura Foulks are all running for city council. Current office holder Randy Sanders filed for the city recorder position.

The last day to withdraw from the municipal election will be Tuesday, February 15 and drawing for positions on the ballot will take place at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 22 in the Upshur County Clerk’s Office. For the county Republican Executive Committee, Douglas D. Roberts and Jeani Hawkins have filed for District 2.

On the state and national level of the election, Senator Bill Hamilton, R-Upshur, has filed to keep his seat for the 11th Senatorial District, as well as Republicans Carl “Robbie” Martin, Delegate District 65, and Adam Burkhammer, Delegate District 64. As of January 31, the three candidates are currently running unopposed, while Democrat Angela J. Dwyer, of Martinsburg, and Republicans Susan B. Lochocki, of Morgantown, David B. McKinley, of Wheeling, and Mike Seckman, of West Union, are challenging District 2 Congressional Rep. Alex X. Mooney, R.
