University and Morgantown claim Class AAA titles in cross-country

HUNTINGTON – There was never any doubt that Buckhannon-Upshur’s Region I was the strongest cross-country region in the state and the 2020 West Virginia State Cross-Country Championships held this past Saturday at Cabell Midland High School just reinforced that fact.

In both the Class AAA boys’ and girls’ championships, the state champion, as well as the top three out of four teams came from Region I.

On the boys’ side, Region I’s University won the title with 47 points while Region I’s Morgantown was runner up with 74 points.

Cabell Midland was third with 109 points while Region I’s Wheeling Park was fourth with 142 points.

University took the top two spots and three of the top five individually.

UHS’s Josh Edwards won the state title with a time of 15:25.48 while teammate Rocco DeVincent was second with a time of 16:15.12.

Christopher Lucas of Hampshire was third (16:21.52), Quinn Jacquez of Morgantown was fourth (16:24.39) and University’s Jordan Thomas was fifth (16:33.13).

University and Morgantown flip-flopped spots on the girls’ side as Morgantown won the state title with 35 points while University was second with 69.

Woodrow Wilson was third with 119 points while Preston from Region I was fourth with 129 points.

Region I runners took four of the top five spots in the girls’ race.

Morgantown’s Irene Riggs won the race with a time of 17:59.82 while teammate Lea Hatcher was second with a time of 18:28.88.

Ripley’s Ellie Hosaflook was third with a clocking of 18:51.34 while University’s Caroline Kirby and Mia Murray took fourth and fifth respectively with times of 19:13.30 and 19:41.52.

This marked the third title for University in the last seven years.
