BUCKHANNON — The Upshur Parish House annual backpack and school supply giveaway will take place the second week of August 2022. They are grateful to the community for its incredible generosity in making sure they are able to provide backpacks and homework supplies for our Upshur students in need.
This program has been in place for many years and they are excited to continue again this year. Last year 800 backpacks were distributed and they are striving for nearly 900 filled backpacks ready to go.
Any family that typically qualifies for the Parish House services is eligible to receive a backpack for each child in pre-K through 12th grade. Recipients must live in Upshur County to be eligible.
Distribution will take place August 8 to 11 with three days at the Parish House, 68 College Avenue, while the fourth day of distribution will take place at the Banks District Fire Department in Rock Cave. This is a new distribution site for them and are very grateful to have the fire department as a partner. No pre-registration is necessary, parents/guardians will complete a form upon arrival.
Backpacks are filled with items needed for homework completion, including, but not limited to: spiral notebooks, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, crayons or markers, folders and more. They will also include a limited amount of personal hygiene items.
They will be continuing to collect donations of backpacks and supplies. Donations can be dropped off any weekday morning to the Parish House or call to arrange another time. (304) 472-0743.
Specific distribution dates, times, and locations include:
Monday, August 8 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Parish House; Tuesday, August 9 and and Wednesday, August 10 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Parish House; and Thursday, August 11 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Banks District Fire Department in Rock Cave (new location).
