The final regular season tournament for the Upshur County Homeschool Archery Association that was scheduled for March 12, 2022, in Roane County was cancelled due to a major snow event; however, the UCHAA team has had a great season overall during 2022.
This season over half of the overall team members are first year shooters in the sport of archery. The team celebrated and spent this past Saturday in fellowship with one another, while also competing in a tournament amongst one another, during their end of season UCHAA team gathering at McFly Outdoors in Horner with end of season team awards being distributed by the coaching staff. The team is very thankful for McFly Outdoors welcoming them into their facility for their team practices and the students’ personal range time as well. The staff of the facility are always helpful to the team, students, and parents.
The UCHAA middle school team is made up of 11 elementary students and 11 middle school students. Of the middle school students, five of those are first year shooters. The middle school team qualified for the State Tournament with a score of 3102. For most of these kids, this will be their first trip to the State Tournament. UCHAA was the middle school State Champion in 2020 but there was no in-person State Tournament in 2020 or in 2021. Head Coach Mike Shaw stated, “this is an exciting opportunity for over half of our team.” The team is excited to participate in this high-profile showcase of talent from all the teams around the State of West Virginia. Currently the middle school team is ranked 7th in the State.
Five high school members from the UCHAA team have qualified for the State Tournament as individuals by being one of the top 15 in the State in their divisions. They are Clay Tenney, Alyssa Lewis, Abilene Supers, Danielle Shaw and Hannah Stevenson. Shaw indicated, “this will be Hannah’s first time to the big stage but the other four are veterans to this arena.”
Those UCHAA members participating in the State Tournament will spend time in preparation for the big event being held today, Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center in Charleston West Virginia.
