Track Bucs win five-team home meet to open season

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur track and field Buccaneers picked up two wins and secured the top spot in the team standings in their first weekly event of the year on Tuesday at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.

Zach Barcus won the long jump with a leap of 19-06 while the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay unit of Barcus, Damien Claypool, Zade Woody and Dakota Smith won with a time of 1:10.60.

The Bucs compiled 123 points to win the five-team event while Lewis County was second with 99 and Elkins was third with 75.

It was the first time the Bucs have ran in nearly two years as COVID-19 wiped out their entire season last year.

“The boys were so thankful just to get out there and participate in a real meet,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Patty Wager. “For many, it was a new experience as high school runners because they had not run since seventh or eighth-grade. I truly don’t think winning the meet meant as much to them as simply being there as a team and being able to share first time experiences with visiting teams.”

Milo Bauman took second in the 800-meter run (216.27) while Claypool was second in the long jump (17-08) and Ben Ball was runner-up in the shot put (36-08).

Four relay teams took second places.

The foursome of Barcus, Zach Mayle, Camden Snyder and Dirk Riley took second in the 4x100-meter relay (49.55), Mayle, Snyder, Riley and Leon Wyatt placed second in the 4x200-meter relay (1:45.77) and Dylan Cornett, Brycen Allen, Baumann and Julian Larcher took second in the 4x400-meter relay (3:57.37).

The Bucs were slated to run at Laidley Field in Charleston yesterday and will return to action next Friday at North Marion.
