CHARLESTON  – Despite only taking eight runners, the Buckhannon-Upshur track and field Lady Bucs still finished in fourth place out of 16 teams on Friday at the Tudor’s Biscuit World Charleston Relays at Laidley Field.

“It was an exciting day for the girls,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “We only entered in 10 events and missed getting third by five points.”

The eight-lady team compiled 67 points.

Huntington won the event with 99.5 points while Hurricane was second with 82 and Preston was third with 72.

The Lady Bucs picked up two wins at the meet, both in relay events.

The foursome of Miah Reger, Chloe Cale, Dezi Pugh and Cameron Zuliani won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:18.78 and the 4x102.5-meter shuttle hurdle relay team of Kierra Arbogast, Zuliani, Pugh and Cale took first with a time of 1:09.35.

Zuliani and Cale also picked up a pair of individual seconds.

Zuliani took second in the 300-meter hurdles (50.88) and the discus (109-04.25) while Cale took second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.89) and the long jump (16-05).

Pugh took third in the 400-meter dash (1:02.57).

The 4x200-meter relay team consisting of Reger, Arbogast, Kylie Keener and Pugh took fourth (1:55.74) while Arbogast placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.79) and Reger took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (52.64.)

The lone sixth went to Catherine Neely in the discus (90-11.75).

“We had four personal records and a couple more were very close to recording their best times or distances,” said Zuliani. “I keep saying it, but these girls work hard every day and that state championships meet is now in their sites. This team is so coachable and wants to get better and better. We have also moved up in many events in the state rankings, which is due to their dedication. We just need to keep that mindset and continue to grind for a couple more weeks.”

The Lady Bucs will run today in their mid-week home event and then compete again Friday the Morgantown Showcase.
