TENNERTON – Catherine Oliveto, Kennedi Lewellyn and Cameron Zuliani all won regional titles for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs in the Region I track and field championships held last Wednesday at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.

Zuliani won the discus convincingly with a throw of 113-00. Her closest competitor threw a 105-09.

“I am very impressed with how Zuliani and Oliveto did as freshman to become regional champions,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “I am just as proud of Kennedi Lewellyn winning the pole vault as a junior.”

The trio of firsts helped the Lady Bucs to a third-place finish overall with 78 points among seven teams.

Wheeling Park won the regional title with 163 points while Morgantown was second with 148.

University was fourth with 63 points while John Marshall rounded out the top five with 37 points.

The top three in each event advance to the state meet along with the best provisional times.

The Lewellyn twins earned a pair of thirds for the Lady Bucs.

Kennedi picked up a third in the 300-meters with a time of 47.41 to go along with her first place and Makenzi placed third in the pole vault clearing 9-0.

Oliveto and Kaitlyn Luterek just missed making states in the 200-meter dash and the discus respectively.

Oliveto ran fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.82 while Luterek finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 88-02.

Luterek still scored for the Lady Bucs getting sixth in the shot put (29-10.50) as did Kierra Arbogast who got sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.49.

Two relay teams earned a berth to the state meet.

The 4 x 200-meter relay foursome of Zuliani, Makenzi Lewellyn, Oliveto and Yami Cerna finished second with a time of 1:49.21 and the 4 x 400-meter foursome of Zuliani, Makenzi Lewellyn, Yami Cerna and Kennedi Lewellyn took third with a time of 4:15.19.

The other three Lady Buc relay teams all scored.

The 4 x 100-meter relay quartet of Cerna, Tessa Hollen, Williams and Arbogast finished fourth (55.03), the 4 x 800-meter relay foursome of Reynolds, Hollen, Williams and Caroline Frye finished fifth (11:37.12) and the 4 x 102.5-meter shuttle hurdle team of Reynolds, Zuliani, Arbogast, and Kennedi Lewellyn took fifth (1:13.23).

“I am proud of the whole team, those who did and did not qualify,” stated Zuliani. “We have had a great season and I love these girls with all my heart. Our regional is extremely competitive for the girls with four of the top-10 teams are in Region I with Wheeling Park, Morgantown, University and us.”

The Lady Bucs will now head to the state meet slated for Friday and Saturday at UC Stadium/Laidley Field.

“When you go to Charleston, you have to be ready,” concluded Zuliani. “The 16 best athletes in the state are there in each event and you have to be focused. The girls have worked very hard all season and all of them have the ability to place. If they try and do their best, then that will be a good thing, but the girls want to place and earn those all-state honors and anything less will be hard for them to accept.”

The results:

1. Wheeling Park 163; 2. Morgantown 148; 3. Buckhannon-Upshur 78; 4. University 63; 5. John Marshall 37; 6. Preston 33; 7. Brooke 31.
