TENNERTON – Following a strong showing at regionals last week, the Buckhannon-Upshur track and field Buccaneers will send 14 performers to the West Virginia State High School Championship meet that gets underway today and will conclude tomorrow at UC Stadium/Laidley Field in Charleston.
The list of Buccaneers going are Logan Bailey, Zach Barcus, Rondon Caeser, Damien Claypool, Dash Davis, Cameron Ervin, Drew Griffith, Cory Hamner, Julius Hobbs, Dakota Smith, Sterlin Thropp, Joey Tomasula, Trenton Westfall and Jordan Weston.
Based on the top performances of the year, the 4 x 400-meter relay unit of Thropp, Griffith, Smith and Davis have the best chance to score for the Bucs as they are ranked sixth going into the event.
Their best time of the season is a 3:35.18.
“The 4 x 400-meter relay team will be in the hot heat,” noted Buckhannon-Uphsur head coach Patty Wager.
The 4 x 100-meter relay unit is ranked 10th heading to states with an event-best time of 45.04 while the shuttle hurdle relay foursome is ranked 10th with their best time being 1:02.59.
Individually, Hobbs is ranked 10th in the pole vault with a personal best of 11-06 this season.
Individually, Thropp will perform in the 400-meter dash while Weston will compete in two throwing events – the discus and shot put.
The other Bucs competing will be Smith in the 300-meter hurdles, the 4 x 200-meter relay team and the shuttle hurdle relay team.
Field events will begin at 2 p.m. today while action will get underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
