WESTON – Taking seven events, the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers easily claimed the 2021 Big 10 Conference Championships this past Friday at Lewis County High School.
The Bucs compiled 142 points to win the meet, way ahead of second place Bridgeport who had 106 and miles ahead of third place Fairmont Senior with 69.
“This was truly a team win,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Patty Wager. “Every single one of these boys contributed to this victory. We are so proud of them.”
It was the first conference title for the boys team since 2015.
The Bucs were powered behind four individual wins and three relay victories.
The Bucs won two running events with Shawn Blandino taking the 400-meter dash in 51.60 and Damien Claypool winning the 110-meter hurdles in 17.00.
Picking up first in the field events were Julius Hobbs in the pole vault clearing 10-00 and Dirk Riley taking first in the discus with a throw of 112-07.
The foursome of Zach Barcus, Blandino, Sterlin Thropp and Camden Snyder won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 46.25 while the quartet of Thropp, Milo Baumann, Julian Larcher and Hobbs claimed the 4x400-meter relay and the unit of Barcus, Zade Woody, Claypool and Dakota Smith won the 4x-100-meter shuttle hurdles with a time of 1:06.15.
The Bucs earned five second places – Blandino in the 200-meter dash (23.47), Thropp in the 400-meter dash (51.72), Barcus in the 110-meter hurdles (18.36), Ben Ball in the shot put (37-03.5) and Jordan Gillum, Baumann, Larcher and Hobbs in the 4x800-meter relay (8:38.54).
Smith in the 300-meter hurdles (45.37) and Jesse Hackett in the shot put (37-02.0) picked up a pair of thirds for the Bucs.
Thropp took fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.72), Larcher placed fourth in the 800-meter run (2:09.43) while Ely Cain earned fifth in the high jump (5-06).
The Bucs will return to action today in a home meet.
