SHINNSTON – Three Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Buccaneers won champions at the Big 10 Conference Wrestling Tournament this past Saturday at Lincoln High School.
The event was supposed to be a two-day event but inclement weather on Friday packed everything into just one day.
Winning championships for the Bucs were Julius Hobbs (126 pounds), Jacob Smithson (170 pounds) and Alex Bennett (220 pounds).
All three wrestlers went 2-0.
Hobbs downed Blake Boyers from East Fairmont in the title match.
“Hobbs had good showing in his route to a first-place finish,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jacob Orr. “He outed a two-time defending Big 10 champion and a and two-time state champion from East Fairmont in Boyers. He’s wrestling at a high level right now.”
Smithson downed Nick Scott from Fairmont Senior for his title.
“Smithson is wrestling like an animal right now and is definitely peaking at the right time,” noted Orr.
Bennett defeated a wrestler from Fairmont Senior for his championships.
“Bennett is a monster of a kid and when he turns it on he’s a scary dude to be on the mat with,” explained Orr.
Tucker Hurst (138 pounds) and Breagan Pearson (145 pounds) both earned winning records for the Bucs.
Hurst went 4-1 while Pearson was 3-1.
“Hurst got a late start to the season but he’s wrestling well right now,” stated Orr. He finally has gotten the cobwebs out and coming on strong. Pearson is also finding his grove in the mat right now.”
Nathan Cornett (132 pounds) went 2-2 while Aidan Wilson (113 pounds) finished 1-2.
“Cornett placed fifth as a freshman and is competing with high-level guys right now,” said Orr. “He’s starting to figure it out. Wilson finished fourth and performed really well this weekend. He’s coming on at the right time of the season.”
Rounding out the B-U line-up were Luke Bohnsack (152 pounds), Trevur Randolph (160 pounds) and Todd Cutlip (285 pounds).
The Buccaneers finished third as a team behind Fairmont Senior who won it all and East Fairmont who finished second.
