Three Buccaneer wrestlers go a perfect 3-0 at home quadrangular meet

Breagan Pearson (left) of the Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Buccaneers puts a headlock on his Preston opponent during their home quad outing last Friday at the middle school. Pearson, wrestling in the 145-pound weight division, went a perfect 3-0 for the Bucs during the quad.

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling Bucs struggled with a partial roster during a home quadrangular match with Preston, Fairmont Senior and University last Friday night at the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School.

The Bucs finished the outing with an 0-3 mark as the Bucs only had seven wrestlers take to the mat.

“We were only able to fill half the weight classes,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jacob Orr. “We had a couple guys out due to sickness and injury. The wrestling team has been hit pretty hard with the flu bug. Almost every guy has taken his turn of being sick including our mat maids.”

As usual in a dual outing, the Bucs that did compete had success on the mat once again.

Julius Hobbs (132 pounds), Breagan Pearson (145) and Jacob Smithson (170) all compiled perfect 3-0 records.

“Pearson is really coming on and finding his groove after getting a late start to the  season due to an injury,” explained Orr. “He looked really good against a tough regional opponent.”

Aidan Wilson (113) and Nathan Cornett (126) both went 2-1 while Todd Cutlip (heavyweight) picked up the other B-U win.

The Bucs now have a 15-15 dual record this season.

They were slated to compete in the two-day Winner’s Choice Tournament at Fairmont yesterday and today.
