Third quarter dooms Lady Bobcat cagers in 60-52 setback to Wheeling Jesuit in conference debut

Brittany Stawvoy scored three points in Wesleyan’s 60-52 setback to Wheeling Jesuit Saturday afternoon.

WHEELING – A horrendous third-quarter did in the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats in their Mountain East Conference opener Saturday afternoon on the road against the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals at McDonough Center.

Wesleyan trailed by just three at the break, at 34-31, but Wesleyan managed just six points going 3-for 16 from the floor along with committing seven turnovers in the third quarter.

The result was a 60-52 setback for the Lady Bobcats.

The Lady Bobcats trailed early 5-2 but ran off seven straight points with Tyra Hughes hitting a jumper, Brittany Stawvoy unleashing a trey and Abi Gabauer knocking down a jumper in the paint for a 9-5 lead.

Wesleyan held onto that four-point lead at the end of the first quarter, at 14-10.

A jumper by Gabauer gave Wesleyan a 29-26 lead with 3:11 left in the second quarter but the rest of the half belonged to Wheeling Jesuit as they closed on an 8-2 run for a 34-31 lead.

Wheeling Jesuit increased their lead to 49-37 after the third quarter was over.

A three-pointer by Hughes cut the score to 49-45 with 6:09 left, but Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer than four points.

Gabauer led the Lady Bobcats with 18 points while Hughes added 10 and Victoria Jackson nine.

Gilyard pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds while Hughes had a team-best five assists.

The loss left the Lady ‘Cats 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the MEC.

Wheeling Jesuit improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the MEC.

Wesleyan will have their home opener Monday as they entertain West Liberty at 5:30 p.m.
